An Exception to the Rule: John Early in the Cordillera

Activity: Talk or presentationOral presentation

Description

The Ateneo Department of History and the Rosita G. Leong School of Social Sciences will be hosting a lecture by Dr. Shelton Woods on the forgotten story of John Chrysostom Early, shedding new light on American policies—both exploitive and benign—toward Luzon’s highland population.

America’s first decade of rule in the Philippines saw Secretary of the Interior Dean Worcester gain absolute authority over Luzon’s Cordillera territory and its population. No one stood in his way, until an obscure American teacher, John Early, fought to end America’s exploitation and massacring of Luzon’s highlanders.
