The anticipated impact of large-scale quantum computers poses a fundamental threat to widely deployed public-key cryptographic systems. Post-quantum cryptography (PQC) offers quantum-resistant alternatives, but migrating existing systems to PQC presents significant technical challenges. This talk examines the primary technical considerations involved in the migration to post-quantum cryptography, emphasizing practical deployment in operational systems. We discuss the cryptographic impact of quantum-resistant schemes on existing protocols. We also discuss hybrid cryptographic approaches that combine classical and post-quantum algorithms as a transitional strategy to maintain security during the migration period. Finally, we outline a phased migration strategy emphasizing backward compatibility, long-term confidentiality against harvest-now-decrypt-later attacks, and alignment with emerging PQC standards.
