Abstract

Basalt appears to have geochemical advantages as a reservoir for CO2 sequestration, but it poses considerable challenges in terms of measurement, monitoring and verification with geophysical techniques. First, it is poorly understood how CO2 injection in basalt influences the elastic properties. Second, layering of the basalt causes strong multiple scattering, complicating (surface) seismic imaging. To investigate the possibilities and limitations of time-lapse seismic monitoring of CO2 injection in a layered basalt reservoir, we estimate wave speed variations due to fluid substitution, and perform numerical simulations of CO2 reservoir monitoring.
