Abstract
The pile-up model of a deformation twin is critically reviewed with respect to its applicability to twin-intersection phenomena. It is found that the stress effects of the twin thickness are not negligible and the pile-up model is not correct. A major part of the twinning dislocations form a dislocation wall and thus the disclination dipole representation is a proper model for a deformation twin.
