Abstract
Introduction: Type II diabetes is a progressive disease currently referenced as a global epidemic. Self-care in conjunction with professional heath care is essential to combat diabetes' impact. Advancing technologies are targeting ways to ameliorate diabetes' wide spread effects. Accordingly, we developed a study to investigate the efficacy of a home telemonitoring, electronic health record, and education management program for people with type II diabetes.
Methods: The control group (N=10; 4 male, 6 female; mean age 59.4) received standard diabetes care, while the telemedicine group (N=11; 3 male, 8 female; mean age 62.7) utilized the ViTel Net Turtle 400 telemedicine monitoring device in conjunction with standard care. We collected data at baseline, six and twelve months and assessed effectiveness by chart review, Diabetes Empowerment Scale, and the Problem Areas in Diabetes scale. Additionally, the telemedicine group completed questionnaires regarding their perceptions of using the home telemonitoring device.
Results: Data analysis revealed a pattern of differences and similarities. For example, the telemedicine group rated their ability to make good care choices enhanced at 6 months and at 12 months, expressed a wide range of support for the benefits of the telehealth approach.
Discussion: We were encouraged by the positive reaction from our sample and have used our experience in this project to expand telemedicine applications. Our presentation will include challenges, solutions, and lessons learned and to stimulate further investigations.
