Abstract

Antibiotic resistant infections continue to be a major health concern worldwide, and the development of new antibiotic drugs is an important step towards addressing this issue. One potential drug target is methylthioadenosine nucleosidase (MTN), an important metabolic enzyme in both parasites and bacteria. This study focused on the characterization and analysis of inhibitory activity of several novel urea-based compounds against Escherichia coli MTN. In an effort to develop drugs with a high specificity and activity, these compounds were designed based on the structure of several other MTN inhibitors that have previously been described. Inhibitor characterization included NMR and IR spectroscopy, along with extinction coefficient analysis and Ki value for bacterial MTN.
