Abstract

Soot formation has become a subject of interest in the scientific community because of its application to the efficient use of hydrocarbon fuels and to health and environmental issues associated with its emissions to the atmosphere. Since this is a complex process that involves a great number of chemical and physical steps, different analytical techniques need to be coupled to gain a better understanding of the inception and growth of nanoparticles in flames. The main purpose of this study is to correlate the information obtained from temperature, particle size distribution (PSD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) measurements to get chemical and physical information about the soot generated during the combustion of aliphatic (ethylene) and aromatic (benzene) fuels. Temperature and PSD were measured using thermocouple particle densitometry (TPD) and a scanning mobility particle sizer (SMPS, over the size range of 3 to 80nm) respectively. Samples for TEM analysis were obtained using a rapid insertion sampling technique. These experimental results are targeted at characterizing differences in structures and morphologies of soot extracted from aromatic and aliphatic flames.
