Abstract

Effective communication skills are essential to high quality of life outcomes for all students. This chapter describes an approach and several strategies for teaching communication skills to students with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and extensive support needs (ESN). It offers guidance across several areas of educational programming including assessment, augmentative alternative communication, teaching basic communication skills, and promoting generalization.
