Contemplating the Future of Performance Improvement: A Herculean Endeavor?

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

As we embark on our journey into the New Year, it seems appropriate to ponder the future of the field dedicated to performance improvement. Progress of the human civilization has hinged on us performing in some capacity or another. And, those products, utilities, or services that did not “perform” or evolve to meet our growing demands were phased out and rendered obsolete. For instance, you may recall that 87% of the Fortune 500 companies from 1955 do not exist today. However, it also appears pertinent to emphasize that a precursor to contemplating the future of performance improvement is akin to “cleaning house” before we can even begin to develop a roadmap for the field. Why? Because it is almost analogous to building more floors when the foundation of the edifice is weak. Why risk the entire structure from collapsing by adding dimensions that it could not withstand?
