Abstract

The temperature coefficient of the dielectric permittivity (τ ε ) and resonant frequency (τ f ) of perovskites and related materials is important in the application of these ceramics to microwave filters and resonators. Recent work has directly related changes in τ ε , and therefore τ f , to the onset of octahedral tilting in Ba- and Sr-based complex perovskites. Whether a compound is tilted at room temperature or not depends largely on the tolerance factor, t. The relationship between t and τ ε is reviewed in perovskites and the effect of changing tolerance factor on τ ε in the perovskite-related solid solution series Ba 6-3x Nd 8+2x Ti 18 O 54 is discussed. Transmission electron microscopy is used to demonstrate examples of phase transformations in the above systems
