Abstract
Southern Nevada's hot and arid climate may cause concrete slabs on grade to experience substantial moisture loss, especially when adequate precautions are not taken. The temperature of reinforcing bars affects the temperature of concrete, and the increase in concrete temperature may cause plastic-shrinkage cracking even though the ACI recommendations for hot-weather concreting are followed. This is illustrated by a case study where shrinkage cracking occurred in spite of precautions taken.
