Abstract

Motherhood is a contested space; from news of opting out to tiger moms to welfare moms (Belkin, 2003; Chua, 2011; Kuperberg & Stone, 2008; Maura, 2010; Paul, 2011; Pollitt, 2010; Vavrus, 2007). Mothers are evaluated by society and one another based on what they do and don't do, and even what they think and don't think about mothering (the action) and being a mother (the role).
