Abstract

This paper uses a case study of an ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) system in one plant of a manufacturing company to examine the way in which companies might respond to "misfits" - situations where the business processes supported by the ERP are different from those that have been in place. The paper uses Henderson and Venkatraman's strategic alignment model to provide insight into the question of how to choose between modifying the business process versus modifying the ERP system. In particular, when ERP processes are inconsistent with key elements of the organization's strategy, the ERP system may well need to be modified.
