Abstract
Currently, there is a nationwide shortage of radiologic technologists, with employers finding it difficult to fill job vacancies. The American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT) conducts a biennial nationwide staffing survey. The most recent survey, conducted in 2023, found an estimated vacancy rate for full-time radiography employee positions to be 18.1%. This has increased from a vacancy rate of 6.2% in 2021 and is the highest vacancy rate since the ASRT began conducting the staffing survey in 2003. In alignment with this finding, a 2022 survey conducted y workforce staffing agency AMN Healthcare found that 85% of the health care facilities surveyed categorized the level of shortage of allied health care professionals at their facility as a great deal, a lot, or a moderate amount. Radiologic technologists ranked high on the list of new graduate allied health professionals hired by facilities, indicating that radiologic technologists are in high demand. Although the causes of the current nationwide shortage are manifold, a better understanding of the current output of radiologic technologists on a geographical level might be beneficial to better meeting employment demands.
