Exploring the Code of Ethics Through Jigsaw Learning to Foster Healthy Workplaces

Background: The revised Code of Ethics for Nurses affirms the nurse’s moral obligation and ethical responsibility to create civil, respectful, and healthy work environments. Nurse educators play a vital role in helping students understand and apply the Code in their nursing practice. Method: The author describes a structured jigsaw puzzle learning activity in which nursing students analyzed Code provisions, collaborated in small groups, and synthesized findings to explore how nurses can foster civility and healthy work environments. Results: The learning activity strengthened engagement with the Code, encouraged collaboration, and helped learners evaluate the nurse’s role in promoting civility and healthy work cultures. Sample student outputs from Provisions 1 and 6 illustrate the activity’s effectiveness. Conclusion: Jigsaw puzzle learning is an effective strategy to help students understand the ethical foundations of civility and healthy work environments, and why these concepts are essential to nursing practice.
