Abstract
On May 10, 1869, when Union Pacific met Central Pacific at Promontory in Utah Territory, the driving of a golden spike became America's first live coast-to-coast multimedia extravaganza. Western Union broadcast the final thud of the ceremonial hammer via a wire attached to the spike. Cannons simultaneously boomed in Boston and San Francisco. Fire engines with screeching whistles circled Philadelphia's statehouse for the ringing of the Liberty Bell.
