Abstract

(First Draft: 2004-2005) – Revised several times up to the Present

Today there are about a billion (more or less) Hindus in the world, and most of them are concentrated in India. In fact, historically, geographically and culturally, the idea of Hinduism is closely bound with the idea of India. After all, the word “Hindu” comes from the Sanskrit word “Sindhu” (the name of the river, which the Ancient Greeks called the “Indus”). The diaspora -- the Hindus living outside India -- try to preserve the traditions they take with them from India to their new homes. Any significant or “worthwhile” (in my opinion) changes or movements in
Hinduism originate in India.
