Abstract
This chapter focuses on using civic literacy and advocacy as a lens to develop mathematical concepts. These lessons give students in Grades 6, 7, and 8 the chance to apply proportional reasoning and further their understanding of ratios. Through discussions around advocacy and a particular issue (food insecurity), the corresponding mathematical ideas are grounded in a context that becomes more real and valuable for students.
