Increasing Student Engagement When the Textbook is Online

Research output: Contribution to conferencePresentation

Abstract

Most of the courses taught in the Library Science department provide all of the required reading materials online with no print textbook for the student to purchase. While students are initially pleased not to have to purchase a textbook, it has become clear after several course surveys at the end of the semester that a significant portion of students elect not to read the materials freely provided to them. This especially appears to be true in hybrid classes where students also receive lectures and participate in class activities related to the reading material. This presentation will discuss the types of online reading materials used in the past in these courses, why they were unsuccessful at capturing the attention of students, and what library faculty are doing now with technology to enhance these online readings and increase student engagement.
