Abstract
Originally in Urdu and later translated into English, this document is a proclamation issued by the Royal or rebel army that challenged British rule in South Asia in 1857. Basu Thakur’s introduction highlights how alongside direct-armed warfare the rebel leaders advocated peaceful social disobedience thus making the proclamation one of the earliest calls for nonviolent noncooperation resistance against the British in India.
