Abstract

It is well documented that early planning decisions have a major impact on project success. Decision rationale or intent is currently not well documented during early project phases. Down-stream decisions are often made without communicating the intent of previous decisions. The absence of decision rationale or misinterpretation of project data may result in cumulative errors. Capturing and disseminating early decision rationale throughout the building process is the primary focus of this research. Using an argumentation framework, this research focuses on identifying, capturing and disseminating intent surrounding pivotal decisions. Pivotal decisions are those decisions which affect the entire planning process and have a direct impact on project success. Identifying and representing pivotal decisions provides a means to filter and process decision rationale.
