Abstract

As defined by Rouse (1962), the Caribbean culture area includes portions of eastern and central Venezuela, the West Indies, the Guyana coastal plains, and portions of western Suriname. The Archaic littoral adaptations documented in the area are of considerable interest (Boomert 2000). Excavations at the Kabakaburi and Wyva Creek shell mounds provide further insights into the littoral tradition in general and Banwari origins and affiliations in particular.
