Abstract

Magnetomechanical properties of 14M ferromagnetic martensite present in a Ni-Mn-Ga single crystal were determined in experiments with a rotating magnetic field as well as in deformation experiments under a constant orthogonal magnetic field. The magnetic field causes two characteristics yield stresses and fully reversible super-elastic behavior. The selection and spatial distribution of martensite variants and the activation of particular twinning systems control the magnetomechanical properties of ortho-rhombic Ni-Mn-Ga martensite.
