Abstract
As former president of the Avis Budget Group, North America, Gartland reports that he changed the culture of the company to having leaders be more connected with their employees. His employees are like an extended family in which he opens his heart, leads with trust, and engages with them. They should feel personally important rather than become parts of a machine to make profits. As a result, morale increased, and the company increased profits. What is unique about this book is that Gartland shares extremely personal stories about his relationships. These stories relate to chapters involved with improving trust, delivering tough news, creating a purpose and strategy, doing crazy new things, seeing new possibilities with coaches, and recognizing the potential in employees. A story incident would have quotes such as “What I did was remind them of who they were—at their best. And everyone responded by saying ‘Yeah! That’s who we are.’” Each chapter ends with questions to help readers relate to the chapter topics.
