Moving Beyond Civic Rituals: Elementary Students’ Understanding of Civic Life in the 2016 Election

Abstract

This qualitative study conducted with a group of third graders explored how young children understood their roles as civic agents. Findings suggested students understood that historical civic agents acted in inconsistent ways, and they saw themselves in the present as civic agents able and compelled to engage in civic life.
