Abstract

Omics alludes to various high-throughput technologies that can analyze the complete set of biological molecules in a given organism or environment, including genes, transcripts, proteins, and metabolites. These technologies have emerged as powerful tools for understanding the complex interactions between organisms and their environments and have the potential to contribute significantly to environmental sustainability efforts. One of the most important applications of omics in environmental sustainability is the study of microbial communities. This chapter discusses the crucial role of microbes in maintaining the health and productivity of various ecosystems through the window of omics technologies to provide insights into their diversity, metabolic capabilities, and interactions with other organisms. Moreover, several applications of omics technologies in unravelling the cords of environmental sustainability, ranging from the study of bioremediation to the monitoring of pollutants and the assessment of the impact of environmental changes on ecosystems are also highlighted. This chapter serves as a conduit of the state of the art of dynamism that these omics technologies are bestowed with to serve as a beacon to protect and preserve our planet.
