Abstract
Terrence Malick's 1998 film "The Thin Red Line" that is based on James Jone's 1962 novel of the same title examines the United States Army's successful bid in the 1942-1943 to wrest control over the small tropical island of Guadalcanal from the Japanese. A crucial turning point in the Pacific Theater, the battle has been the first step toward larger Allied victories in the region. The film is brilliant in its portrayal of relationships between soldiers and civilians, between officers and their men and between humans and nature.
