Nuances of Translating Medieval Romance-Language Poets

Abstract

We translate medieval Romance-language poets including the French trouvère Mahieu le Juif, Occitan troubadours Bernart de Ventadorn, Giraut de Borneilh, Bertran de Born, and Arnaut Daniel, the Catalan mystic Ramon Llull, and Spanish romanceros fronterizos of the Reconquista. In our remarks, we will address issues such: 1) How far to go in matching formal characteristics (rhyme scheme, meter)? As many of the poems we translate were composed to be sung, to what extent should the translations fit into a musically defined pattern? 2) How far to stray from the lexical register and vocabulary choices of the original texts? What determines the level and type of fidelity to diction to be achieved? 3) How far to acknowledge previous translations of the same or similar poetry? What is the relation of our translations not only to the original poems but also to the tradition of translating such works? 4) Why translate such poetry? What meaning can it have for contemporary readers, and how can a translation capture the appeal it has for its translators?
