Abstract

News literacy is an increasingly important educational endeavor as societies and individuals struggle to combat disinformation. Research suggests that news literacy, or the knowledge and skills needed to successfully navigate the news and information environment, can help individuals resist and avoid disinformation, misinformation, and conspiracy theories. Our research aims to develop a conceptual model of news literacy and create a valid measurement tool that can be used across national contexts to help define and assess news literacy. This project describes the process of creating our latest news literacy measures and offers data from three surveys, including our most recent in summer 2022 (n=1,500). We also examine relationships between news literacy and other important variables, such as political activity and civic knowledge.
