Petitions: Translations of the Pamplona petition and the petition to the Council of the Indies

This chapter consists of translations excerpted from the Petition of Pamplona and the Petition to the Council of the Indies for Erauso to receive a financial reward for the "services" rendered to the Crown as a soldier in Peru and Chile. The Petition to the Council of the Indies records Erauso's "merits," which comprised a presentation of their family ancestry and genealogical claims. The Petition also records Erauso's "services" to the King for which Erauso provided documentation and called upon witnesses. Erauso's service in the Americas is corroborated by a number of Spanish officials. Within this Petition are documents gathered in Pamplona in 1625, after Erauso came back from France. In this documentation from Pamplona, Erauso is exclusively named Antonio de Erauso, and all documents refer to Erauso in the masculine. Presenting petitions to the Council to be rewarded for military services was a common practice during the seventeenth century, and Erauso followed the standard bureaucratic procedures. As was customary, the Petition was revised by the Council, which made a recommendation, and forwarded it to the King.
