Teacher Video Production: Techniques for Educational YouTube Movies

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

YouTube has amassed a growing library of academic video content from colleges, universities, educators, and others. Certainly, much can be done with existing video to support instruction. Yet, there is the always the possibility that video on a specific topic either cannot be located or the quality is poor. Custom video productions, using low-cost equipment, can be created to fill the void. YouTube offers free hosting with an array of built-in tools that support both video production and online distribution. Unfortunately, guidelines specifically for educators who wish to create video for YouTube distribution are scarce. This paper opens a discussion of instructional methodologies, techniques, and technological considerations for YouTube video production. The information is based on the author’s research and experiences teaching several iterations of an online “YouTube for Educators” course.
