The Art of Strategy : Sun Tzu, Michael Porter, and Beyond

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

Moon (Seoul National Univ.) compares strategic business management ideas of Michael Porter from the Harvard business school and the strategic military strategy of Sun Tzu, author of  The Art of War , written about 2,500 years ago. Porter provided comprehensive ideas involving businesses, industries, and countries. One example includes analyzing the origins of competitive advantage—namely differentiation and cost of products and services. Sun Tzu emphasized searching for tactical advantage and minimizing the costs needed to succeed in warfare. Mao Zedong, Bonaparte Napoleon, and today’s military strategists have used his principles. Moon outlines similarities and differences between their ideas on economic considerations, avoiding competition, unique positioning, minimizing disadvantages, being flexible, long-term thinking, location considerations, information strategy, and other topics covered one chapter at a time. Each chapter includes military case studies such as the American strategy in Vietnam, the Battle of Incheon, Japan’s Pearl Harbor attack, the Long March, and the Trojan War. Each includes business case studies from Google, Walmart, Southwest, Starbucks, Sony, Hyundai, Toyota, and other companies. Well referenced and simply organized.
