Abstract

Carbonates in a soil profile can be the result of precipitation dissolving CO2 in the atmosphere with forms a weak acid, bicarbonate, that then reacts with calcium in the soil. Bicarbonate can also be introduced into a soil profile from groundwater which also reacts and forms Calcium Carbonate. These soil carbonates are an important component of soil chemistry. They play a key part in regulating pH, nutrient availability, and the water-holding capacity in soils. My poster will show how these soil carbonates are affected by irrigation and highlight the importance of understanding the spatial distribution of soil carbonates.
