Practical developments in the field of energy transitions are reviewed, including aims associated with net-zero systems, energy security and critical materials. Recent shifts in the current energy playing field are examined with indicators, reporting considerations, carbon accounting challenges and cost-benefit aspects. The chapter concludes with an overview of the rest of the Handbook.
