Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

Conger, leadership development expert, and Church (PepsiCo) share insight on how to become a high potential employee to accelerate promotions, receive more resources, and become visible to senior management. Fifty years of academic research, assessment practice of leading organizations, and interviews with high-potential leaders contributed to conclusions. The authors provide guidelines regarding five x factors toward career enhancement. High-potential employees must understand what their bosses desire and should develop team-related leadership skills. With more challenging assignments, they must effectively handle ambiguities and complexities. They should write compelling narratives that capture their leadership potential aimed at a variety of career-enhancing audiences. They must always keep learning, develop their talent, and transform the status quo in their organizations. Each chapter provides detailed tips on how to perform, such as preparing for an interview, networking, and choosing challenging assignments. The chapters also discuss the pitfalls of certain actions and summary lessons. With the emphasis on moving up within a corporation, the bulk of the book seems to be targeted toward employees early in their careers.
