Abstract
My former department chair in the School of Education and Human Services at Eastern Montana College took great pride in the fact that Martin Ritt’s film Conrack had become such an immutable component of his sections of the freshman-level educational foundations course. Had I been interested in winning his political patronage, I might have taken his frequent recommendations to view the film more seriously. For better or worse, I never held such an interest. Therefore, I never saw the film until just recently, when I was doing research for a chapter on the Gullah for Anna Marie Evans’s collection: Teaching the Diaspora. 1.
