Abstract

The benefits of physical activity and sport are well documented. Physical activity is unparalleled for its ability to reduce overall mortality rates and improve health risk factors. Despite these positive benefits, a large portion of the world's population does not participate in regular physical activity (U.S. Department of Health and Human Service [USDHHS], 1999).
