The Unbalancing of Corporate Systems: The Neuroscience of Intellect vs. Wisdom

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

By enabling businesses to pursue maximum profit to the near exclusion of other factors, Human Performance Improvement (HPI) practitioners have perhaps inadvertently helped to perpetuate a seriously unbalanced system. Businesses are arguably the dominant institution of our time: large, multinational corporations have more influence than most governments. The majority focus narrowly on profit and, in so doing, contribute to adverse social and environmental outcomes that outstrip our biological, psychological, and even spiritual abilities. Current neuroscience and psychology researchers—Richard Davidson at the University of Wisconsin, Paul Glimcher at NYU, and Jonathan Cohen at Princeton, among many others—offer insight into how the world we have created seems mismatched to the long-term health of its inhabitants.
