Abstract
“It is an immutable law in business that words are words, explanations are explanations, promises are promises but only performance is reality.”
–Harold S. Geneen, CEO of International Telephone and Telegraph, 1959-77
Performance improvement and performance opportunity–driven activities are typically undertaken by organizations to alleviate or attenuate hurdles within the organization and to create value. The lens adopted to improve performance is varied with no single accepted definition and generally undertaken along with myriad strategies and tactics to enhance performance. For instance, performance improvement to one category of stakeholders could mean training; to another it could mean enterprise-wide information technology solutions; and others may refer to topics around strategy to improve upon performance. What differentiates practitioners of performance improvement from other fields devoted to the same goal of organizational performance is this notion of solution neutrality. Thus, with a fluid target being performance, how does one ensure maturity within performance improvement solutions?
