Abstract
This symposium highlights the changing racial composition of bi/multiracial families in the U.S. over the past 40 years. Empirical findings are presented that link racial and ethnic composition of the family to relationship quality and parenting stress in multicultural and same-race families across the transition to parenthood. The session closes with a critical analysis and discussion of the unique experiences of biracial/multiracial couples’ across the transition to parenthood, focusing on: (1) the dual reality that can occur when your children appears to be of another race; (2) the need to recognize and validate the experiences of discrimination and microaggressions; and (3) a greater understanding of the diversity that exist within bi/multiracial experiences.
